Default Half shaft question on 74 convertible??

We (17 y.o. son) are restoring a 74 convertible from two cars. One had a shed fall on the front end fiberglass, the other was hit in the rear. One has a really nice frame and gutted interior, the other has a rusty frame and really nice interior .

Back to the half shafts. One has 3" diameter shafts, 13 7/8" c to c. with strap type clamps at the differential flange(standard duty?). The other has 2 1/2" diameter shafts, 13 7/8" c to c with caps that thread into the differential flange(heavy duty?). Both appear to use the same u-joint dimensions.

Question: Should we use the big shaft and threaded cap differential flange?

Thanks, I will post some pics as soon as we make some headway.

the smaller diameter was used up to early 74 and the large diameter late 74 on up. So you can go with either one unless you are going to do NCRS.

If you need to R&R the Ujoints you need to reinforce the flange with some sort of backing plate, otherwise the flange will bend when you push the Ujoint caps out. Look at Eckler's 88-0373-1.

Thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately, we have already disassembled the shafts. I will check for any bending when I get back home.
