I used the same paint on the steering column as I used on the door panels and dash. If you go with a vinyl paint the texture will match the rest of the interior. A semi flat or satin paint will end up looking like the center gauge console. I got my paint from Ecklers.
What kind of prepping did you do to the steering column? I have rust spots that make mine look awful..was thinking of steel wool to smooth it out and then paint...do you just do more than one coat of paint or something else as primer? I think the interior pics our our car show the condition of ours pretty well. http://www.al-andalus.com/73corvette
Hi Laurie
I had the same problem with mine. I sanded the bad spots with fine sandpaper around a 220 grit. Once the spot was smooth I just sprayed about 3 coats of Interior paint/dye and it's held up very well. Go to my website and take a look at the interior shots. My bad spot was where the keys hang down and bang against the column, probably a common problem. If you want to use a primer you can get it along with the dye. The primer is used for hard plastic pieces but you should be able to use it on the column too. Good luck.
Laurie - the finer sandpaper you use, the better the final finish. I would think that 220 would be fairly rough, but good to remove any distorted areas like rust, but I would follow that with 400 and even 600 to get a perfectly smooth finish to paint. My .02!
Re: Good Paint for Steering Column... (BSiegPaint)
Thanks for the prep/finish tips. We are on vacation next week and most is dedicated to working on the car...while hubby is debating the parentage of calipers and seals I will be painting the interior pieces.. Will be taking pics for everybody :)
Anyone use Omni paint in the spray cans? Our local paint shop sells a lot of automotive paints and will mix and put your color in a spray can. I was planning on stopping in his shop to ask a few questions and check out color/fishish types ya know flat, glossy etc....a girl thing :)
