So I really have only driven this car maybe a few miles. I had to fix the worn out leaking rubber fuel hoses before I could actually drive the thing. My question is, after a few miles I get this faint rotten egg smell entering the cabin. This weekend I'll be flushing the coolant, and hopefully changing the tranny and diff fluids. What would that smell be coming from?
This may not be of any help to you, but the last time I smelled that in a car was when our XJ8 Jaguar's secondary timing chain tensioners gave out, and the secondary timing chain jumped a tooth on the cam sprocket. I think unburnt fuel was getting it's way into the catalytic converter. Lucky we spotted it when we did. If it had jumped another tooth, Mr exhaust valve would have had a rather nasty encounter with Mrs piston!
Last time I smelled something like that was when the battery regulator failed on a C-47... Batteries overcharged.. You might want to take a look at your battery and charging system ...
Another vote for the cat... When I had this happen on a car once, I fixed it with a hammer and a very long chisel followed by a few muffler clamps... No more cat, no more problem.
Thanks for the info, charging system indicates its ok. Probably that 34 year old cat then. I'll replace my factory exhaust with a stainless steel setup later I'll just replace the cat then.
