If you do a decent amount of night driving, I can assure you that 4 of these headlights will BLOW away anything discussed previously-no contest in terms of light intensity, light dispersion pattern, light color, bulb longevity and light uniformity-NONE! I have the 55/60 watt low beam and 100 watt H1 high beams with the highs on a relay. Remember:Like most things in life, you get what you pay for! There is a reason that a Cessna aircraft landing light is $15 dollars and the Hella below is $50.
vette427-sbc what size relays would you recommend and where would you place them in the circuit?
I also have very dim original headlights and will be updating to the 5001 and 5006.
I upgraded with new bulbs and relays. I had a problem with my headlamps shutting off. Read about it here...
Replace the cheap bulbs that come with them with a couple of Sylvania Silverstars, and you are good to go. The Sylvania bulbs are 55w low, 65w high, so no need for a relay.
They aren't HID, but this is a very simple upgrade, and well worth it in my opinion. It made a big difference in my car.

They are Hella 40A relays... I have them in the drivers side fenderwell so that my power feed from the alternator is short.
If you are really looking for the ultimate headlight, there is a company in long island that has started making HID projector housings for older cars. Got a set a few months ago for our '55 Chevy and they are fantastic. Expensive, but awesome light output and control
Not to hijack the thread but heres a quick pic of the light output at 30+ feet away from the wall. I think Ill end up getting a set for my vette because Im just not happy with the low beam pattern and output from a sealed beam light (especially after driving at night with these). I will be leaving my landing lights in for the high beams though because they are even marginally better than these HIDs
55W 3500k for headlights and i have 100w yellow halogens for brights. (Alittle european looking) Nice and white light for the hids.. I have 4 hella housings. They have a nice cut-off and actually slant cut a little off the road as to not blind oncoming traffic. I made some aluminum sleeves for the ballasts and mounted on the underside of the nose on either side. Of course they're relayed and I upsized the wiring. Man I need to take some updated pictures, these were when I first installed and didn't have them aligned well.
Hids
Difference between hids and regular halogens I bought.
FWIW: if you are considering having the car judged and have the original T3s, you should hang on to them.
Or better than keeping the originals, get reproductions from
lectriclimited. They match the original Guide T3s in appearance, but have "improved brightness to meet current Federal Highway Safety Standards - without comprising originality".
They are pricey but really work, they light up the road, especially on high beam when all four are on. They are better than any modern halogen lights I have experience with. The only thing better is the HID system on my C6ZO6.
No relays or special wiring necessary.
