You're wasting money on a new high volume oil pump. You don't need or want high volume. I'm using my original L48 oil pump and drive rod in my 383. Just tack weld the pickup, clean it and reinstall it.
Then put the money you saved toward better pistons. Cast pistons are not good for any performance application.
Stoker kit any and every chance you get!!!
Don't worry about the HV pump. Almost everyone on here that's done an engine has one but the tack welding the pick up is great advice to follow
BKbroiler,so in your opinion is the 383 stroker kit better than the 350 master kit
Definitely yes. The 383 kit has a new Scat crank rather than the stock type crank. (Cast cranks are OK at this level. I have one in my car. But the cast pistons are a big risk.) The 383 engine is what you want in general. The low end power from that longer stroke is very significant. Since you're not putting good heads on it you need to maximize your low end power. The 383 does that. Save a few hundred for a higher stall converter, around 2,500 rpm. Put a good Qjet on it and you will surprise people.
Aren't you the guy with the 60,000 mile L82? Your swaping a fully forged internally balanced rotating assembly for a cast crank, cast piston unbalanced rotating assembly. Do a compression check and leakdown test. A good set of heads is your best bang for the buck if your engine tests well. Your taking a giant step backward.
I'm a fan of the 383, but with a budget of a thousand dollars I'd save up another 1000$ and buy a good set of heads and cam shaft that could later be used in a 383 set up. I'd hate to see you spend the money and be unhappy with what you've done.
I agree with using your current short block if the compression is still good.you can get some good dart iron eagle heads for under $700 .consider a summit cam kit ,and a nice dual plane intake .

You may or may not need anything done. Sometimes it's just a hone and new rings, new timing set , new stock oil pump, degree the original cam , a better ignition curve, tuned carb, headers, and a better intake.
Money spent on better heads with smaller chambers would be icing on the cake !
