Well my new cable came yesterday, my son and I went to work. He has long arms (and is only 19 so he can still bend) so he reached up behind the dash and after a few minutes he was able to locate and disconnect the cable, I pulled from the engine bay and it was out. The new cable is about two inches longer so when we installed it there is a "S" shaped bend from the firewall to the tach. is this normal or a problem? I also put a little extra grease on the sahft, than I noticed the package says "do not grease"
It seems to work fine (I only started it for a few minutes to make sure it worked) but all in all it was'nt a bad repair. Total labor time under an hour.
Thanks for all of the advise.
There is a metal spring type clip on the tach, you need to either push or pull to release it. My son did that part (I can't fit under the dash) it wasn't bad though.
If the cable is too long requiring an extra or tighter bend, it can cause intermittent binding of the cable, more drag on the cable core or possibly even breaking off the ends of the cable in the distributor housing. The current GM replacement cable is 20.7" long & part number 25032184. If your cable outer housing is in good shape but the core is shot or the ends worn you can have a new core made for the cable. Tony's Corvette shop made a new core for my original '70 cable. http://www.tonyscorvetteshop.com/
