Hello. I just put the new crate engine into my 1974, and it seems like it all seated properly and is actually sitting on the engine mounts. The only issue seems to be about a 1/4 inch gap between the bellhousing and the engine block. I know you are not supposed to crank it in with the bolts, but I'm not sure what is causing this, or how to fix it. Any ideas?
The dowels make for a good tight fit tight fit. I put mine together outside of the car and it still required wiggling and pushing. If you get desperate, you could try using the pilot tool again for a better alignment. If the clutch is hooked up, you could try pushing it in.

Hmm yeah I'm definitely not taking the engine out again that was a pain haha. Clutch isnt hooked up but I could shortly have it in. At this point what is holding it up, the splines, the pilot bushing or the dowels?
All of the above! Do not draw it in with the bolts. That is a sure way to disaster. Is the trans in neutral? Can you put in gear and try turning the driveshaft. (On the ground push the car back and forth). Next thing to try is to depress the clutch and free the disc.
If none of these ideas help I'd take it apart and find out what is wrong.

Yeah dont worry definitely wont do the bolt method! It's in neutral now, but I like that idea with the pushing. I'll give that a shot
Thanks for all the help! I worked, I put it in gear and bumped it a couple of times and it drew itself in. Now to bolt everything up and finish the job up

better to pull trans down and have a look if the above tricks don't work. I split an AT casing once pulling it down with the assumption it was tight on dowels
