I am put car back together after a complete restoration. I'm just installed driver's side lower dash pad. I went to connect the tachometer cable to the back of the tach, and found there was a large cast bracket partially blocking the hole for the tach cable behind the tach dash can. The bracket in the way is the large bracket thats part of the steering column bracket system. (The steering column is not installed at this point). There are 4 nuts that I have loosened that allow the smaller of the two brackets to slide left and right - I believe this is to allow steering column adjustment. I did loosen these, but unfortunately its the larger bracket above that one thats in the way and loosening these nuts doesn't help. Has anyone run into this problem before? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Steve
I'm not sure i understand your problem correctly. I just went out in the garage and looked at where the tach cable comes, out of the firewall on mt '69. Should be very similar to your '70. The cable is about the level,of the top pf the valve cover (SBC) and at a part of the firewall that is angled about 45* from across the car. The tach cable is nowhere near the steering column or the reverse lock cable.
The cable comes out of the firewall and makes a gentle curve toward the tach. The tach cable drive should be about across the car, not pointing back. I hope this helps

Reason: Fix iPad spell correction - Ha!
Thanks for looking Pete. The obstruction is under the dash, right at the point where the cable would enter the back of the tach cannister. The large steering column bracket I'm referring to bolts to the firewall (inside the car). It is large. So although the column is centered between the tack and speedo cables, the bracket is wide enough such that it is partially blocking access to the tach receptacle where the tach cable plugs into it.
