Default Broken Ignition

I just broke the rod that connects a gear that the key turns to the ignition switch. :-(

I had to remove the steering wheel, turn signal switches, etc. to even find out why my car wouldn't start anymore. The problem is I can't figure out how to disassemble the part of the steering column that the rod is housed in. It's a T/T wheel on a '74.

Anybody ever had to fix this before? It seems strange that the rod would break because it doesn't look like it should have a lot of stress on it. Already tried JB Weld with no success.

Right now I'm considering putting toggle and momentary switches behind the dash to bypass the ignition switch - I hate driving the minivan!

Go to http://www.corvettefaq.com and look under Steering. Download Tilt & Telescoping Disassembly Instructions as well as the Blowup Pic and additional Pics #1, #2, & #3.

You need to remove the pivot pins so that you can disconnect the Ignition Switch Actuator Rod #49 on the Blowup Pic from the Switch Actuator Rack #48. It sounds like the rod is somehow broken or disconnected from the rack. BTW you will need to get to the bottom of page #5 of the disassembly paper to be able to disconnect the rod.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jim!

I never would have tried pulling the pivot pins. This is the first car I've done much work on so I'm nervous about removing things when I don't know I can get them back together again.

It's the "Switch Actuator Rack" that broke (just right of where the arrow is pointing on the diagram). Any idea where I can get a new one? I found one at vettes.com but it says it's for 78-82. :-(

Zip Products has a Ignition Lock Rack & Rod Kit for the 69 thru 76 T&T Column. SC-433 $36.00 for the kit. 1-800-962-9632

Dr. Rebuild shows just the rack. He indicates that the rack is good for 69 thru 82 T&T Columns 2187426 $8.00 1-800-866 9362 (Orders Only)

Probably the difference is the rod that makes a kit for the early columns versus the 1977 through 82 column.

I am sure that there are other Corvette suppliers that have these parts as well.

Thanks for the info! I'd never heard of Zip Products or Dr. Rebuild. $8 will make my car and my wife happy!

P.S.
I can convert the Word Docs you have on corvettefaq to PDF if you're interested. That would speed downloads and make them accessible to everyone.

It's not my websight. I belongs to Terry Rudy. You should contact him from his websight. It's OK by me.
