Default engine identification

Hi,
I recently purchase a 1969 corvette and I am having trouble identifying the engine. The casting numbers are 3963512, which I recognize, but the stamping is a different story. The stamping is V01113CPW with no partial VIN stamp that I am able to locate. Also the front stamp pad is smaller than I am used to seeing. I have looked for the partial VIN around the oil filter with no luck and the stamp pad is not large enough for both stamps. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Clayton

3963512 is a 427 or 454 block.

CPW is the code for a '71 ZR2

but no big block engines were built at the Flint (V) plant

01113 is one too many digits.

As already stated, a pic would help.

That's not a factory stamping.

That's interesting. I've never seen a "short pad" 512 block before. What's the date code on that puppy?

I think the Date Code is F 29 70. I found it on the top side of the block by the bell housing.

Doesn't look like the stamp pad...looks like the water pump boss that protrudes from the stamp pad on some older blocks. What kind of heads are on the block? Perhaps they are covering the actual stamp pad. OR maybe the rest of the pad was machined off.

Well, F 29 70 would be June 29th, 1970, but that doesn't help explain the "short" pad. (I don't know of any big blocks that came with the short pad. Mid 1970's and later small blocks, yes, but not big blocks). I also noticed the casting number fonts aren't the same! The 396 is smaller than the 3512. I wonder if this block originally came out of a marine or agricultural application.

Doesn't look like a later square SBC pad either, at least to me.

Any ideas how to verify if the block was used in a marine or agricultural application?

Not that I know of. It was just a guess on my part, and only due to the fact that the pad is short and the casting number consists of two different font sizes. NOT typical for a passenger car or truck block.

Are there any other casting letters, numbers, symbols, etc... on the block?

CPW I found in one of my books, CPW 454-CID 4V 425HP M/T, Aluminum heads. BUT it lists it for a 1971 corvette...... something dosent add up.

The suffix isn't "factory", so we can eliminate that from the equation, but I'd like to see more pictures of the block. Can you post (or send them to me directly), a few shots of the front, sides, bottom and top?

Ed
