69 speedometer sticking issues

69 speedometer sticking issues
My speedo sticks. If you drive 50, and then slow, it still indicates 50.
When i purchsed the car, upon disassembly i noticed the speedo cable wasnt clicked home against the speedometer. it worked ok prior to disassembly. I think maybe my speedo cable has stretched and/or is too long.
Willcox list a cable at 72".
Is this a standard length?
Is my 69 427 4speed factory with a one part or two section cable?
Can i unfasten the cable jacket at the tranny and pull out the cable to replace it?
I currently gave a one piece cable sysrem.
