Default Engine start up question

50% of the time when I turn the key the engine fires right up. The other 50% it turns over 2-3 seconds before it fires. When this happens I also get some smoke just for that second or two after the engine starts. As far as I can tell that's the only time it smokes. It sorta acts as if it's slightly flooded.
I'm wondering if it could have something to do with the air/fuel mixture on the carb.
Any suggestions?

mine does the same thing, there are 2 small soldered fuel fittings under the carb, assuming you are still running the Rochester. they will dribble fuel if not resealed after sitting, when you fire it up yes it is rich and smokes.

It's a Q-jet made by carter. Should I adjust the air/fuel? Would that help? I haven't worked on cars since I was a teen so I'm very rusty. This is a 77 with an L48.

same engine and year as mine. adjusting wont do anything, its not a constant problem that occurs every time, you could send the carb off to Lars and it wont happen anymore.
