My right turn signal DASH light only comes on when the steering column is tilted way down (in my belly)... When the steering column is in the "mid-range" or "up" position, the dash light works normally..
Here's the strange issue.. when I actuate the turn signal lever up (to the right), with the column in the down position, and the dash indicator light is NOT blinking, the right REAR turn signal works, but the right FRONT turn signal does not...
If I raise the steering wheel (tilt it up), and the dash indicator blinks, then both front and rear lights also blink.
My Question...
Does the wiring harness (gang plug) on the top of the column, have separate connections for left and right turn signals (I guess it would have to) and does the circuit go through the dash indicator (it must as the front turn signal only works when the dash light is blinking)??? If so, I can't figure why the indicator light would prevent the front turn signal from illuminating, and not the rear....????
I am out of town and don't have access to my wiring diagram..
I have somewhat the same problem in my 71. when tilt wheel is up, blinker(green arrow) stays on, when all the way down I get the same. But, when in between of all the way up ane all the way down blinker works perfectly. Go figure??? I'll be watching this post. Hopefully someone has the answer,
Mike
The wires for the directions run up through the column to the directional lever. Sounds like you have a short in one of the wires. When you are tilting the column, you may be pinching the wire causing the short.
It's not that hard to take apart the steering assembly. The horn mechanism and steering wheel come off easily and you can rent a tool at Autozone to compress the column to get the C-clip out. If you have a tilt/tele column you need to get a set screw to screw in place of the star screw to keep the column from moving in and out.
