I replaced my leaking valve cover gaskets with the rubber ones in hope of stopping the leak. I use synthetic mobill 1 since the goodwrench engine had been broken in. I replaced the valve covers along with the gaskets for some chrome ones I picked up for $5. at a car show awhile back. I put the oil filler on the front drivers side and now have the pvc on the left side. thus eliminating the breather to the side of the air filter. Do I need the pvc setup to the carb base or can I just go with breathers in the valve covers for both sides?
It is a good idea to have the pcv on a street drivin car. It keeps the blow by gas from accumulating in the lower end. the pcv pulls fresh air in through the breather on the other valve cover. breathers on both valve covers will not pull the gas out, it needs the vacuum to move. There are a few advantages
to this, one is that the gases are corrosive and not good for the lower end parts, and under extreme circumstances they have ben known to build up and explode, That was what started the car makers to try and vent the crank case in the first place when slow moving military vehicles would have a build up in the block and blow up! If the valve is in good working order there is no loss of power or performance.
There are no down sides to using a PCV system.
If any one remembers pre PCV system cars, how we used to scoop the sludge out of the crankcase and the oil pans. Oh what a mess!
The PCV removes the by products of combustion and unburnt fuel from the crankcase and pulls them into the intake manifold to be burned. It actually gives you something for nothing. You will have a cleaner crankcase and and better fuel milage. You will also have a cleaner engine compartment because you will not have any oil vapors being spread on the engine.
