Default Cylinder Wall Scrapes

Hi everyone, I have had my motor out and taken down to the short block for some time. I found "mild" scrapes about 1/2 down two of the cylinder walls. I can BEARLY feel them with my finger nail. I was told this is probably due to the piston skirt touching. The block looks clean, freeze plugs and oil plugs look brand new. The pistons have some oil burned on top, but that is because my heads were crap. A bad spring round one of the cam lobes. Should I be concerned about the scrapes? I was going to have the block machined and checked.... It is already .030. What would you guys suggest??? I was thinking of putting on a new set of heads and stab in a cam and lifters.. then drop her in... I was thinking Vortec heads or AFR 190..... Thanks for the help...

The machine shop will measure for out of round and ware. Some times you can get away with just a hone on a low mile rebuild. Or they can clean it up with a .010 over which in your case is 4.040. I've run .060 over 4 bolt blocks without a problem. I used to even have a sleeved block because I had a couple of rods that went through the cylinder wall.

It's not a big deal if you have a good machine shop.

Hone it. More will get past your "out of the box rings" than past those scratches. You won't be able to tell the difference, besides you're going to drive it like you stole it anyway. Honestly you can get away with a lot of stuff.

Is anyone using gapless rings? After Steve Staus' suggestion, I am going to go with AFR 190 heads. Anyone using these?

If it can catch your finger nail it's too deep. I would bore to the next larger size. That motor will not last more than 30,000 miles if you don't have a clean bore. Go with a .040 if you can. Better safe.
