Howdy. I installed my new GM Crate 290 HP in my 1974....I went to prime the oil pump and it works (oil is all over the inside of the engine) but it makes a sound. It feels good drill wise and with a screwdriver (feels a little notchy, like you can feel each gear lobe). I felt my old motor and it felt and sounded basically the same, but was a little easier, I'm sure because of the miles on it.
Heres a video, let me know what you think. Is this normal? I'm having a brain fart as to the other engines I've done...
The engine is under warranty so I would call them first. If its just a faulty pump, no big deal. But if its a Monday engine? Tell them to take it back!

Pull the pan and check or replace the pump. Don't fire it up that way!!!
It does have a warranty. One thing I noticed is my other engine sounds the exact same. Tomorrow I'll try my other priming tool and see if it changes anything. What could cause this, oil pumps are like the simplest pumps there are...
I did some research and this situation is actually kinda common. Even in other videos the exact same sound can be heard. I guess its normal? Even melling (the pump mfg) said is you dont hear it in reverse its fine.
If you dont push down/slow the speed down as much it should be quiet. Same thing on mine threw me off for a sec. have the "bad" melling pump and run it up past 7k with no problems.

It's not actually a melling pump, I was just Id'ing the pump mfg melling but yeah I was pressing kind of hard to keep it seated (didnt want it to fly off and damage something). Haha the redline on this motor is 5100 RPM, so it shouldnt be a problem

Ok good stuff. Yeah I saw some other videos with the same sound. Seems like it can either be quiet or make some noise, doesnt matter either way. I'm sure once the pump is broken in itll be quiter.
