So, wanted to take distributor cap off yesterday and when I pulled one of the wires off, the terminal stud came out, stuck in the terminal boot. Got it out and put it back in place, but the spade part of the terminal looked short, like the bottom part of it broke off, wore down or something. Have a new DUI cap and rotor on order from Summit, and car runs OK, but I wonder how the one cylinder on damaged terminal is getting any spark. Maybe it is getting some from whatever part of the spade is still exposed and firing across any gap. Anyway, need that new cap ASAP! Ever heard of something like this?
Twisting from side to side on both ends of the wire before pulling is a good idea. Assuming this is HEI it has no problem jumping whatever gap has been created in the cap.

Usually have to wiggle them to get them loose from the cap. It is HEI with a 50,000 DUI coil on the top, so that is what I figured - it is jumping the gap. Still need to fix it.
New DUI distributor cap, coil, rotor received from Summit Racing and installed in under 30 minutes. NO MORE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT that I have been chasing for probably 2+ years. Looking at old cap, the short/missing terminal was no where close to being close to the rotor to pick up something of a charge. So I have been running on 7 cylinders for all this time. No wonder gas mileage is 12 - 15 best and not a smooth ride. CEL went off after about a minute after computer had time to re-program.
