Default Sticky Tach

1968 tach goes up slow and returns slow, sometimes it goes up to the last rpm and sticks there but after driving and get some heat in things it seems to be OK or maybe a hair slow. I don't think its a lube issue but I could be wrong. If I reach under the dash and pull the housing with the slightest and I mean slightest pressure the tach drops fine. The cable is making no noise. Could the housing be a hair to long or or the screw nut on the back be a little to tight.I think if the cable was to long it wouldn't change. If I just take the housing off ay the tach can I pull just the cable out, then push it back in, or will it not go back in the gauge that way. Has any one experienced this issue. Works sooner in warmer weather. Cable and housing are like new

Thanks
