I have have a 1974 Vette that I have been told as a B&M 350 auto trans. Will a R 700 overdrive bolt right in with out any modifications? If not what needs to been done. What is the cost of a good rebuilt R 700 trans.
Thanks. Yes I'm a newbie to this forum
Me=Rookie.....Im guesiing that you already have a 700 trans available...Rebuild it DIY---$600.....Have it rebuit===$1,000 (Personallly---I'd like to convert the TH350 tolock-out torque converter/"Overdrive"if possible )I read that true Overdrive involves adding an extensionhousing to the transmission with an extra gear in it)......(The Overdrive we think of is actually is a lock=out torue converter/solenoid combo that causes the trans to fuction better which lowers engine RPM on the highway)
if so......new TV cable----good lock-out torque converter----good lock-out solenoid in transmission---vacuum actuated electric 12volt switch to control lock-out solenoid on acceleration amd sudden stops....fab two1/4" thick plates to move engine forwar approx. 2" because 700R4 is longer....may have to replace splined yoke on front of OEM Corvette drive shaft to fit tailshaft of 700R4....may have to mod transmission tunnel a little to keep transmission fron rubbing it...may have to change transmission tailshaft-rubber-mount to fit 700R4......may have to unbolt transmission rear crossmember and relocate it a couple inches to fit properly.
Sonds like a day's work but work it if your doing a lot of open road driving it's more than worth it in engine wear & fuel consumption ) plus;;;;;you can add a toggle switch to turn off the Ovedrive function whenever you feel like "having a little FUN".
I probably will take the 700R4 out of my '36 Pickup and install it in the Vette/rebuld the Vette TH350 and put it in the truck which would suit both vehicles better.\ sonce I will not be using the '36 for long trips anymore....unless I'm transporting the Harley!
Pics when I do the swap.....I still have to wrap up the interior work first though.....maybe this week!
