It is tight, but it can be done. Driveshaft will have to be completely removed, then there are 4 bolts that hold the rear housing on. Might help to put a jack under the trans and remove the crossmember for extra space. Be aware- sometimes the bolts that hold the tail housing seize and can be a bear to remove. That pesky "steel bolt into aluminum" thing.
I've had to change the drive gear a few times with a rear end change. Make sure that you have a few extra drive gear retaining clips. There are easy to break the tab on.
It's time consuming but not so hard. Good luck.
The tire size and rear end gear ratio determines which drive and driven gears are needed to get a speedometer to read accurately. Take a look at this site...

yes...I know the math in general, I also know that a stock driven gear, with a 3.08 rear and stock tires is 19 teeth...
My questions was, what is the stock drive gear for a 1977 TH350...
