I know what an oil filter does. It filters the oil.
An air filter filters the air.
Fuel filter......
But what does a "tach filter" do ?
Thanks...
It filters out the electrical spikes so that your tach goes up and down smoothly instead of bouncing. They always seem to go bad when you change something with the ignition. If you get weird readings on your tach, like it stops at a certain spot you can just cut out the tach filter and reconnect the wires.
If you remove the tach filter, your tach will most likely start jumping around in various rpm ranges, and act screwey, and or false readings....sometimes way off....WAY off....
needs that filter because of the various ringing in the ignition circuit...
there is a schematic published here on forum by someonw else, some years ago...
do a search....
I thought the tach filter was something on the tranny
I didn't quite follow where it is. Could the ground now on the aluminum manifold screw it up (not a steel ground connection to the frame) ??
Here are some pics of the home built tach filter. I know the pics are crummy but at the time I was making due with a primitive digital camera.
Obviously this is not the way to go if your trying to maximize your NCRS points standing. :D
This looks like the way to go...I can't see the pix well enough...can you post info of resistor and capacitor values or part numbers? Maybe even a soldering diagram or explanation? Pic looks like it is all soldered too close to see...thanks again.
The resistors came in packs of 5
and the capacitors came in packs of two.
All that is needed is
1- 0.1uF Ceramic Disc Capacitor
1- 100pF Ceramic Disc Capacitor
1- 10K ohm resistor
1- 5.6K ohm resistor
While following the electrical diagram that Smokehouse69 provided, twist
them together, and solder it all together along with the wires that go to
the distributor, tach, and ground. Cover with shrink wrap and you are done!
Can I get some more info on where the tach filter is? I'm having trouble finding it. What bank of the engine, what does it hook up to, stuff like that.
TTT- I would like to know too as my tach does some jumping at the higher rpm's Is the filter the thing that looks like a condensor in the picture and where is it found under the hood?
Is that a .1 uF or a .1mF you got? The diagram calls for a .1 mF and I think there is deference between them.
BY the way, were did you get the connectors from, Radio Shack? If so do you have the radio Shack part numbers?
Here's the post with the scematic that mrvette was talking about. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=136220Here are some pics of the home built tach filter. I know the pics are crummy but at the time I was making due with a primitive digital camera.

Schmucker,
Another pic to complement my original above. The filter has been painted since but here is the location: the small, black cylinder in the centre of the pic.
