Default L48 motor help.

Ok I've abandon the idea of the 327 rotating assembly in the 4 bolt 350 block I have sitting on the stand.

When I bought this 62,000 mile 1980 corvette L48, it had a cam replacement just 2000 miles (and 14 years) prior to my ownership. Looking at the receipts it shows a Crane crn-968711 300 hp cam, I'm thinking it is pretty much the stock grind.

Here's where I'm headed.
Looking at a

Magnaflow true dual exaust with headers from corvette central.
http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb....Z5Z5Z50000050G

Promaxx performance 2169 heads, (I've read good reviews) http://www.jegs.com/i/ProMaxx+Perfor.../2169/10002/-1

Or

the Flo-Tek heads 102505. (Good reviews also)
http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Flo-Te...lug,25118.html

Both are 64cc heads

Prefer to keep the stock aluminum intake and carb to save money or if i have to go edlebrock preformer with a Holley carb.

All that cam stuff just flys right over my head. The aluminum heads with the smaller combustion chamber volume should bump compression. Unfortunately I'm thinking the 300 hp cam just won't cut it.

For all you motor guys, which cam would be best suited for this type set up?
I only want to do it once, I keep coming back to the comp cams 268 but as I said. I'm clueless.
Roller cam?
HELP!!!
My leadfooted wife's Hyundai sonata is hard to keep up with off the red lights.

Oh and it has a 3.08 rear gear and I don't want to mess with the stock TH350 lock up converter.
Also changed we're the double roller timing chain kit,
Hi volume oil pump and shaft,
Harmonic balancer,
And all the other little items involved in the change.

What say you.....

Yah, it's probably the infamous "390" (.390 lift) cam. Not a keeper.

I have no experience with either head - I tend to stick to the mainstream brands...they may cost a little more, but there are zero surprises. Surprises are expensive

These discussions start best with how much you honestly want to spend...

Here are a couple flat tappet cams that would work very well,( imho ), with what you have in mind. I would use 1.6 rockers with these because they are small cams and aftermarket heads do flow so much in the upper lift ranges.
The next best way to gain a higher valve lift is to run a roller cam, but you do not need much duration at all.

look at heads on Ebay ,some great prices .or check out competition products ,they seem to have better prices then jegs or summit.I like the comp ex268h cam with a elderbrock intake .retain the Q-jet ,they make great power and give you better gas mileage .I like roller cams ,but if you are sticking with the stock converter and rear gears it is not worth the extra cost.I saw the summit 224/234 cam do ok ,but I don't trust quality.

Speedway Motors line of budget heads ranked very well in flow vs. cost, along with the Jegs heads. So you've done your research on budget heads very well.

You'll want good bottom-end torque for sure, single pattern cams do well in this aspect ,(trading HP for low=end torque).
Heads will give you HP with much better flow and the smaller combustion chamber raising the compression slightly, and any cam larger than stock will also give you more HP, but you also want more torque and at a low enough range to do you the most good.

With your gears & convertor you will be able to turn the tires from idle if you don't over-do the cam's duration. With more gear and a looser convertor you can increase the duration, but you'll still have to mind the duration because you'll not have much compression after all !

Like everyone likes to say "it's the combination".

If you go with decent heads don't choke them with low lift and less duration at the upper lift where the cylinder fills. This cam is decent price, will work with your compression increase and stock convertor, No worries about wiping a lobe or break in and RPM range is 1300 to 5500.

If you are on a budget consider the summit/dart 152123 cast iron large valve 72cc heads. They come with screw in studs and 525 lift springs and are $630 shipped to your door. I have them on my carbed 84 C4 and are nice heads for the price. The cam's listed would all work fine and even the old comp 268 he cam would work fine.
