Ok guys, my belts were squealing when I first fired up the car a couple weeks ago. So... I replaced both belts. Problem solved, so I thought. Now when I get the car up to 75 they start squealing. Any ideas why? They seem to be tight with no play
That AIM picture should apply. I have p/n's for the belts for my 69. They may not apply to the 73.
Dayco 15325 Crank to Water pump
Dayco 15445 Crank to water pump to Power Steering
NAPA 25-08003 Power Steering to Alternator
Use caution if your setup has the crank to water pump belt without an idler pulley. Too lose and it still squeals, too tight and it eats the bearings in the water pump. You have to remove the fan to install.
Has your assembly instruction manual arrived yet? The AIM will show the correct belt routing for your car (Tim's pic is an AIM page) and will show the idler if one was used on your car.
I fought this exact same issue and TimAT has hit your solution exactly.
Generally speaking - this issue is somewhat common after the removal of the AC compressor when the empty belt grooves (where the AC belt was) are not used. The AC belt grooves must be used - a crank to water pump belt is needed in it's place or you will get belt squeal. I tried different belts, widths, brands, new PS pump, etc. Nothing solved it until I ran that belt. No more squeal.
Sanding the pulley grooves did help mine as well. They are 30+ years old and tend to get polished smooth (too smooth). Adding in a belt from the crank to the water pump also gave me a little peace of mind over just one belt on the water pump.
