Both of my brake lights don't work. I have removed and checked the fuse; removed the brake light switch and checked continuity, - it's OK; and removed and looked at both bulbs. I have 12 volts at the fuse block. I failed to check if I had 12 volts at the brake light switch connector.
I have rear turnsignals and running lights but no brake lights. Is there a common point where both brake light circuits are grounded?
Jim,If the tail & directional lights are working, then I don't suspected a ground problem,as the tail directional & stop share the same ground. The stop lamp switch gets it's supply from the fuse box,& then from the other side of the switch to the directional signal switch.Maybe your problem is in the switch.I maybe way off on this, but it's just a thought.
Neil.
Both bulbs, both elements inside the bulbs look good.
One more piece of the puzzle. The hazard warning does work. (i.e. rear tail lights flash when I push in the strg column hazard warning ****.) I hope this means my problem is most likely not in the steering column switch.
BTW, trying to follow the tail lamp circuitry on a Corvette electrical schematic is like following a rat maze! And then trying to figure out why and how things work is a whole nuther issue!!!

Re: Need Help With Brake Lights (Jim Shea)
Jim I had to replace the switch on my brake lights twice. The first time the lights worked fine until one day the brake lights just went away. The wife called and told me a man follewed her to work just to tell her she had no brake lights. When the car came home I took the switch out and checked in my hand and it looked good so I put it back in the car and it worked for a few times then quit again. I finally pulled the switch again and made it fail in my hand so I just bought a new one and it hasn`t happend again. Knock on wood. Those things are buggers to take out.
Jim, you should have steady 12 volts on the orange wire at the brake light sw. and when you press the pedal, you should have 12 volts on the white wire....which feeds the turn signal and 4 way switch, IF from there you have no brake lights on either side, and the rear ground is fine.....check that gound just to be sure, it's on the driver's frame rail just under the gas tank....the problem could be in the steering column....just your territory....
snicker....;-))) and inside there you should find a cup of soup too.....
This is my old standby post for brake light headaches. Make sure you have a good connection here where the turn signal harness connects to the lighting harness under the dash. This was my culprit twice, the third time I ended up changing the turn signal switch. Good luck!
