Helping a friend with replacing the AC evaporator coil on his big block. Can the fiberglass cover be removed with the engine still in place? Looks like the exhaust manifolds/valve covers would all have to come off at least.
Anyone have any tips on doing this?

thanks
Nick

I was able to do this on my 71 BBC.

I did not have to remove the valve cover.

I wouldn't say its a job you want to do just for fun, but really it wasn't that bad either.

Took me about 2 hours to get the old evaporator out. I also removed the AC box from inside the car. I replaced all the seals and the heater core. Cleaned and painted everything. Then took about 6 hours to get it all back in.

Pulled mine out of my 72 no issues.
It comes out in two parts.
Once you unbolt the two halves life is much easier than it looks.
Didn't remove the exhaust manifold, valve cover, nor compressor.
I will say it was a plus to be able to remove the fender vent in order to loosen the large hose joint from the evaporator though, an option you won't have with a 69.

When you go to seal it back up you can use plain caulking cord (black, white, gray doesn't matter) usually found in your local hardware store. Fits the seal groove perfectly. AKA weatherstrip cord, rope caulk, etc.
