'72 rear spring color?

What would be considered a correct color for the rear leaf spring leafs? Were they raw steel, or painted some color? If they were raw steel, is there some approx color that can be sprayed or powder coated on so they don't rust again?

Painted grey in color with black inserts between the leafs.

Semi-flat? Semi-gloss? Gloss?

Flat, lighter shade of grey, almost like a primer grey, dull finish.
