I have a question about starting my 82 after its shut off. It starts as if its slightly out of time but my timing is right at 6 deg. What the book calls for but its the smell I get afterwards like a strong burnt carbon smell. Any ideas?? Don't know how else to describe it but I think the two are related.
I know exactly what you are talking about. My 350 SBC did exactly the same thing---it was also similar to the cranking that a weak battery would cause. After two more starting attempts, it "turns over" perfectly and runs well.
(I installed a new timing chain & gears when I bought the engine that had 50,000 miles on the previous owner's rebuild)
I can't give you a definite solution because of my ADD (I readjusted EVERYTHING instead of adjusting one thing at a time to isolate the cause).
I did replace a internally corroded battery cable and cleaned the metal-to-metal connection at the frame (the corrosion couldn't be seen on the ends of the cable--it was under the plastic outer insulation--green & powdery).
I readjusted the timing about 3 degrees higher (There is no timing pointer on the shiny chrome timing cover I now have....dummy-Me).
I replaced the brushes in the starter/cleaned the internal area.
The problem could have been one or all of the above. The engine has not had a starting problem in two years now.
