Merlin777 – A Sneak Preview
Now 3000hp....? how in the F*$k could you possibly use 3000 hp on the street? to me that seems a certain death machine. you'd either kill yourself and most definatly someone else if you ever took it out. Which i imagine you wouldnt....it dosnt seem to be the function you care about, just this adventure you've bought by building it.
You ever think about that? Maybe you're just getting your kicks by throwing money around and having all these guys drool over your money pit?
Come on dude, take some tai chi lessons or something. This is kind of sad...
Monty – I welcome the comments & criticisms very much. Unlike that Rusty character below your post, you always give me honest responses which are based on knowledge. Below is a sample email that I received earlier tonight. Does anyone else see the flaw in this logic? A turbo is simply a piece of machinery designed to move air. The bigger the turbo, the more air it can move. What kind of statement is “turbos love small engines”??? It’s thought processes like this that drive my projects. He’s also saying that I can’t exceed 2,000HP on gas. Not only do I think I can exceed it on gas, I think I can exceed it on PUMP gas. I’m really glad this guy emailed me because now I know Merlin 2 needs to be built. I’m having real problems believing this guy has a car that runs 6.30 quarter miles based on the info provided above. Again I will re-iterate. I’m not trying to build a full race car. That has already been done. And I quote -
“your latest engine plans are quite simply stupid. turbos love smaller cubic inch engines, and with777or whatever cubes you dont need any turbos, furthermore gas no mater what type cant ever exceed 2000hp period.and you forget about ever getting down the track. you insult every real racer in the country with this crap.what you think people on this site dont have a brain, well i guess some dont, my pro mod runs 6.30 227 and my outlaw street now runs 7.20 and i will personally pay your plane fair and strap you in see how you like it. maybe you are insane , but biggest baddest never gonna happen ,never does . not ******* your ideas just telling you not needed, many better combos out there.”
P.S. – I have never heard of or seen a T108!! Now you have my interest peaked! This is exciting & right in line with what I’m thinking about. I’ve read all about the quad system John & Mike built. Though it is out of this world & definitely very nuts, I never saw any dyno numbers on it so I’m not sure if it broke any ground. It also would be highly impractical for the street, would be tremendously hot & would not fit in the stock body. The next car has to be able to cruise around town & possibly go on long trips. I don’t think the quad will qualify. I did enjoy how they started out the article though. Total, Absolute, Wretched Excess http://www.popularhotrodding.com/arc..._article.shtml Chuck’s car is also very amazing but I believe it was a pure race setup as well. Do you think that thing would be able to function on a long trip? With those times it’s got to be a full tubbed car & that’s not what I’m about. Let’s talk more, this is good stuff…
He is a 22 year old that was not taught any manners. He probably drives a stock Honda civic with a fart can and wing. Pay him no mind. He cannot imagine yet what it means to work for years to gain a job that you can finally do something with your money that you want to. He does not have enough years in at Taco Bell yet. Your dreams are our dreams. I for one am living mine through yours. Keep posting and keep building mean machines. We are all supporting you.

What I like about your car is that you hve built it on a terrific foundation. If the Whipples get to be too much of a good thing maybe you'll consider only half the power wouldn't be too bad. You can always change out the induction and actually CLOSE the hood. But, you will always be able to say that you built it as a 2000HP car. Anyone knowing this will also know that you can always put it back if you ever felt the need. The suspension, frame, gears, and all of the other wonderful little touches you have made will still work with whatever engine combination you choose. I don't see you painted into a corner. Finish your dream, and then help point it in another direction you want to check out.
Your posts have created far more interest because it has progressed over such an extended period, marvelously documented the whole way, helping many of us to feel we are part of it. Even if it isn't what we would have built, it has helped many of us formulate or build our own dreams. Thank you for doing such a great job!

Scott - Hello, its nice to be among the living again after 7 consecutive terms of college. I'll be around...

Anyway, I'm thinking it'll be great fun to watch you build it. I know that I'll be well informed since I've seen the kind of web pages you put out, both in quality and in frequency of updates, so I'm excited to see it get going. Here's the first thought that came to mind though:
He wants to sell Merlin1 to build Merlin2........where the heck is he going to find someone with enough money to buy Merlin1? That car has to exceed a quarter of a million bucks!!! And he thinks he can sell it in a year????
So that's the questions I have. :yesnod: Of course, look where I'm from. Around here if you make 6 figures you're one of the 4 richest people in the state. We think somebody really spent the cash is they bought a new Cavalier, so the thought of even dreaming of something like Merlin is nuts. :jester I guess dreaming big is different to different people. Dreaming big to me is a ZZ4. Dreaming big to you is the first ever C3 capable of lunar orbit.
P.S. remember we have one he!! of a Corvette rally right here in SD. It's called the Black Hills Corvette Classic and it's in Spearfish. It in the middle of July, (July 17-21 this year) and I personally would love it if you would bring Merlin1 to it for us to see in person. Probably not this year, but don't forget us for next year.

One of the most interesting things about Steve is not his car. Its not the amount of money put into said car. As impressive as both of those things are to me, the way he treats people is equally impressive.
I have never read a thread that he started or was asked one or more question(s) that he did not respond to each and every person. Not only that is the way that he takes the time to check everyone's profile to address them by their actual name and not just the user name.
He always takes criticism for everything he does, but still manages to dream up (and then build) his own personal supercar(s). He just let's stuff roll of his back. And he doesn't attack people for having dreams and aspirations. Those are traits that a great many people on this forum just can't seem to grasp.
Oh yeah...BTW nice car... and nice plans too. (I don't suppose you could convince Art Morrison to let you keep the plans for that chassis...?)

Keep up the good work and don't get hurt. :seeya
I hate to be negative here but I have driven too much power, I know the fear it puts in you when it comes around in 3rd. I know how hard it is to get off the line. etc, etc.
Until you have spend time behind the wheel you really don't know nothing about your car.
I apolagize? Steve for getting a little steamed but I KNOW my car and it's scary. You have alot more power and you can not talk about it until you have experience. I worry more about you then Monty because I feel he knows what he is doing. YOU are learning and I hope you live through the learning curve.
Have a great day Steve and I am sorry but I had to say it.

he can just hire a professional driver and take movies of it going down the track. That's what all the team owners do. :D
As far as the long stroke issue, my turbo project with a short stroke shifted at 7,000, and with a long stroke 5,000 . ET was the same
