i have a '75. when the engine was stock, i installed a hypertech coil and an accell performance module. noticed easier starting.
after the first rebuild.. went with an MSD dist, 7AL2 ign control, blaster coil, and digital retard module (all MSD).. by that time the enigne was making an easy 7K rpms, and the hei proved to be worthless at those rpms.
BTW, don't be hesitant about running a "race only" ign on the street... at the time the vette was a daily driver with the race engine and ignition. the MSD even made the trip from texas to philly with no problems.
I concur with the above... you may want to stay away from some of the aftermarket stuff. I blew two coils last year... one was a hypertech... the other accell. Both started off fine... then blew within a month. Back to original GM AC Delco... and no problems. Good Luck.
The stock HEI module has been shown to peter out at around 4500 rpm. I think it is wise to upgrade myself.
Some companies have new HEI distributors with out this newer module and are not indexed spot on either for the same price as the following.
Mallory has a new on the market HEI distributor for less money than the other inferior pieces with a high voltage coil, the good module and cap for 159.95 and are indexed well from what I have heard. It is part number MAA-8548201c at Summit
So if you have a high mileage distributor with potentialy worn haft bushings now might be the time to upgrade to a new distributor instead of paying 75 bucks or so for the module alone. Then you get the new coil, cap and all .
Just a thought you might concider as an alternative
