#1 cylinder is the 1st spark plug at the front of the engine on the driver's side. The firing order goes in a clock-wise direction when looking down at the top of the HEI cover.
When the #1 piston is at the top of the compression stroke, the rotor in the distributor should be pointing to the spark plug lead that goes to the #1 spark plug.
(but I don't have a photo)
