Last night on the way home from work my '79 pulled hard to the right while braking, I was making a right hand turn at the time. When I got going straight again I hit the brakes hard (I live in the Calif. desert, lots of room) again and got the same response. A few sec's later the brake light on the center instrument panel came on. So I replaced the master cylinder, that took care of the light (it went out) and the car no longer pulls to either side. But while "testing" the car after the M/C swap I discovered a loud clunk coming from the left front during the last few feet of a hard panic stop. It'll do if I just stomp on the brakes in a parking lot at 5 MPH. I've had the car since March 26 (my first vette) and have not heard the clunk, although that doesn't mean it hasn't been there all along, I don't hear so good anymore. I jacked it up and looked for something obvious last night, I also looked at the frame closely. I didn't see anything. This morning I'm thinking it might be front end bushings. Oh, it doesn't make the noise in reverse. Thanks in advance for any help guys. augie
My '68 did this when I first bought it. It turned out to be a passenger side upper A-arm bushing. When I'd brake, the A-arm would go rearward hitting the shaft against the worn rubber bushing collar, causing this clunking. I redid the front end with all new A-arm bushings, and the clunking went away. :yesnod:
