Yes an NPT tap.
There's a brass plug threaded into the drivers side of the block. Remove it, drill out the center, tap it reuse your sender. IIRC mine was 1/2" NPT on my 68.

Here are a couple of other options:

The ECM uses the LS sender in the drivers side head.

1) Drill out the pass cyl head and tap it to fit the old school sender

2) Turn down an old school sender and cut threads on it to match the metric head

3) Use an aftermarket sender with metric adapter

4) Remote mount the sender. Drill/tap the WP, weld a threaded bung onto a short length of 1.75" pipe and splice it in the radiator hose, use an adapter to mount it on the radiator etc
Here are a number of hose splicers - http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Cooling-S...rts_Order.html

I plumbed an adapter into one of the heater hoses and used an Advance Auto temp sender. The temp readings seem to be reasonably accurate - my fans turn on at the hash mark before 200 and the temp never seems to go beyond that. I haven't measured the temp with an IR sensor to verify the accuracy.
