I have an '80 with a ZZ3 crate engine which I upgraded with Twisted Wedge heads, a Carb Shop Stage II Quadrajet, Hooker headers, hi-flow cat and mufflers, B&M 2400 stall and Jacobs ignition package.
Problems:
1) What used to be a very stout package now runs like a V6 (carb doesn't seem to fully open, power is mediocre at all RPMs). I've now been through three highly recommended mechanics and each one allegedly went over the timing, carb etc, but no gremlins were ever found.
2) There's only one Lars, and last time I checked (5/15/02) he was no longer touring
3), Texas has just introduced more stingent emissions standards. The car used to pass (marginally), but I have my doubts about this year. (I don't understand how this engine can be a polluter with 208/221 @ .050 cam specs, EPA certified heads and smog-legal exhaust. I refuse to believe this area doesn't have someone who can razor tune a non-computerized small block Chevy, but I haven't come across one yet.
I had considered dyno-tuning out in Lewisville, but a discussion I saw on here a couple months ago led me to believe that these only tune for the numbers (highest HP & TQ) which isn't necessarily tuning for street driving, and might be even more detrimental to emissions.
Give JB a call. He has done some work on my '69. Good work, fair price. More than that, he gave me warm fuzzies for someone working on my car other than me.
Guys, thanks for the replies. I'll give Rich a call today. Riorta, JB just painted my car two months ago; I had no idea he did any performance type work (great paint and body though). BTW, sounds like you're over there serving your country. We appreciate it! Come home safe!
JB does fabulous body and paint. That was why the other woman was at his shop after a no drivers license, no issurance bimbo whacked me last Labor day. While spending time at the shop I had a chance to talk to JB and his crew about some of the other things happening on the floor. I have "warm fuzzies" from my observations that JB (and crew) can do whatever is necessary to my vette and make her purr if I choose to not do it myself.
Uncle Sam has decided that I will be doing my part overseas for 365 days or more here in Bahrain. Just doing my part. I did, after all, raise my right hand (more than once) and "swear to support and defend ....." 6 years of Active Navy a long time ago, 15 years of reserves and now called back to Active. This heat is tuff on and "old fart!"
