My hood release **** on my 82 has slack in the cable causing the tube that the cable runs through to hang up on bracket when pulled out. How do I adjust slack out of cable so that handle doesn't travel out so far.
I'm new to this but working on the same assembly currently. There is a "lock nut" if you will a the end of the cable near the latch. IIRC you can unscrew the nut and move upwards on cable to remove slack.
I'm sure others will chime in if I'm misinforming you.

And while in the process of adjustment, inspect the cable for any fraying or worn sections. If it doesn't look good, replace it. When you pull that hood release and it ends up in your hand, you have a real issue getting you hood open. Don't ask how I know. On my 81, I installed a separate short cable on each side and hid them down in the cowl as a backup release in case it ever happened again.

Went to adjust mine and the cable was so frayed in had two strands of the cable left, just replaced it with aftermarket one.
