Default Big Block Casting Date Location

Hey guys, I'm looking at a big block car with the 512 casting. Is the casting date located on the bellhousing flange near the distributor (I see a date code there). Or, is the casting date somewhere on the bottom near the pan rails?

Thanks. --Neil

You kind of answered your own question Neil. However, to go one further, the early 512 blocks had the casting date on the passenger side of the block until the March or April, 1969 time frame. After that it was moved to the ballhousing flange.

Thanks Ed. I saw the date stamp on the bellhousing flange when I inpected the car, but then I came home and read that the casting dates are down on the bottom passenger side of the block. It's a Sept. '69 block so it sounds like the date I saw near the distributor is what I needed to be looking for.

Yep. Alan (Colvin) states in the 65-69 CBTN that the changeover date for the casting number location was November 17th, 1969, but that's incorrect. I researched this for the Camaro site and discovered the changeover occured much earlier than that. The earliest I've seen the date on the bellhousing flange is March 5th, 1969, but I've also seen a March 10th, 1969 block with the date on the side, so there was a bit of an overlap period. Probably depended on which molding line the casting was poured on.

Alan also states the distributor boss was changed from the tall to the short style on that same date (November 17th, 1969), but again that's incorrect. That change occured between June 17, 1969 and July 12, 1969 going by the blocks I've researched.
