my wipers work fine but when in intermitant mode they run a the regular "slow" speed and are not ajustable...
is the problem in the switch?
and if so...does it come out from the back or the front? im guessing it comes out the hard way,,,from the back!
goin to Carlisle in a few weeks and im bettin on some rain so it would be nice if i can get them working... :yesnod:

Re: WHO KNOWS ABOUT INTERMITANT WIPER PROBLEMS?? (SizzleChest)
wow, intermitant wipers... must be nice. you 79ers and yer fancy luxuries. :D
my 1980 has that too, but it is not a feature or a luxury. My wipers intermitantly work. I tried to use them late last year for the first time that I had it in the rain -- didn't work. I stoped, met some of the local CF guys, talked for a few hours while the rain stoped. I hoped in to move my car now that the rain had stopped, and then the wipers worked :cuss !!
Drove home, started raining -- wipers stoped working again, this time part way up !! :cuss
I replaced the switch and have been good since. That job was NOT FUN.

Re: WHO KNOWS ABOUT INTERMITANT WIPER PROBLEMS?? (SIGNGUY)
I think you'll find that this may be related to the "module" that controls the wiper delay feature? I have the feature on my 78, but a while ago the wipers stopped working altogether. When I looked for a fuse, there was a "Heath Robinson" affair in the slot, a piece of insulation plastic with wires soldered on to it. I discovered that this goes to the module that is under the dash (on my 78 anyway). This has apparnetly failed. Some info from the forum (WombVette I think) pointed me to remove the connector thingy and put in a regular fuse. This brought back the wipers, but has eliminated the delay (and the ability to push the switch for washers and get the wipers to start automatically).
The module is apparently pretty hard to get hold of, I saw it in an old Chicago Corvette catalogue, but it's not there now. It was $200+. I'm still trying to find one over here in the UK. :(
Perhaps have a look at the fuse block and see the situation? If you're going to Carlise that might be a good place to look for a replacement? Could you pick me one up as well :D ;)
Re: WHO KNOWS ABOUT INTERMITANT WIPER PROBLEMS?? (Stephen Irons)
MY recommendations on int. wipers is to go to Radio Shack, look in the little electronic construction books for a timer chip called a 555 timer, they give wiring/schematic diagrams....it will close/open a relay for int wipers...
on the slow speed portion of controll wiring....
now do it with the wiper door on say a '72.....;-)))
Re: WHO KNOWS ABOUT INTERMITANT WIPER PROBLEMS?? (SIGNGUY)
I need a little more information on that Radio Shack chip. Got a part number?
I have been trying to fix this for a while now, but it started raining and I had to put the controler back in. I guess I will have to wait till winter.

is it a box about the size of a pack of cigarettes? bolted to the floor under the console??

Did you ever get this probelm sorted out? The thing you had the picture of was indeed "it". If you put a fuse in the fuse block you can get a good idea if it's the module down or not. And, if you have a fuse in there, it's probably the module that someone else has by-passed. I'd be interested to know your findings. The problem with a relay type of delay fix as mentioned above is that it doesn't take car of the other things, like the delay timer, or the wash/wipe facitlity.....

no...i havent fixed it yet...i posted this pic before and nobody seemed to know what that box was...
what fuse are you talking about? certainly not the wiper fuse...i have one of those cause my wipers work...is there a fuse for that module??
i will be removing the console side panels again in a couple of days to install a new parking brake cover...i will look at that "box" again then...
how do i tell if the module is bad?
thanx for the info!

The power for the wiper module comes via the fuse box, up under the dash by the pedals. There is a "slot" for a wiper fuse. But, if the wiper delay feature is fitted, the fuse is replaced by a rather strange ;looking piece of plastic insulation card. It has a couple of wires soldered to it. I believe that there may be an in line fuse, but I have yet to find it. However, if you find that there is a fuse in the fuse box in the slot marked "wipers", but you have the delay feature apparently fitted to the car, then it implies that the module went bad. The "quick fix" is to pull the strange connection and replace it with a fuse.
I confess that I have yet to establish how to find if the module is bad! When my wipers stopped I was advised about the fix, and tried it. They now work, in the fashion that yours do. I did try putting a circuit tester on some of the connections to the module, but couldn't get any readings. I now have a multimeter, and as soon as I get the time to have the car apart I'll run a few more checks. You could have a look around under the dash and see if you can locate the connection piece "hanging around" anywhere. As I say, its a brownish plastic piece of flat material about an inch square, with two wires soldered to one side, and some pieces of metal on the other that allow it to be a tight fit in place of the fuse. If you find it and put it in the box and the wipers are dead, you’re probably half way to knowing that the module is not functioning!
Hope that’s at least a little useful! Keep me posted.
Re: WHO KNOWS ABOUT INTERMITANT WIPER PROBLEMS?? (Stephen Irons)
I have also found that my module is faulty,& I doubt if anyone sells them anymore,I would suggest you remove the module,& take it to electronics shop, they can at least check out all the components,& replace those that are faulty.Unclip the two connectors & out it comes.

what is the difference between a car with intermittant wipers and one without? the switch, a relay? i'd like to have them in my car seeing as how it's my daily driver right now. thanks

The wiper switch is different for the delay wipers, there is a built in potentiometer,to vary the time delay of each wipe.there is also a remote wiper control module, which operates the wiper motor.
Re: WHO KNOWS ABOUT INTERMITANT WIPER PROBLEMS?? (Fleetwood)
Just adiing another story...
On my 82,the intermittant wipers did work, and I always had a normal fuse in there.
Now,all the sudden,I only have "normal" wipers, with 2 speeds. The Wipers won't start when I use the washer, and the delay function just freezes the wipers when they are in use,or simply doesn't start them. The "mist" function does work.
I thought it was the module in the storage compartment gone bad,but now I read about this special fuse????
Remember, they did work for a day or so.

My understanding is that the system on an 82 would be slighlty different from that found on our 78s. I do know that the module is not the same, apart from being in a different location I'm told it works in a slighttly different way, whioch may explain the symptoms that you have.
I'm pretty sure that on the 78 system, when the module goes bad, everything stops, but I do recall in earlier posts someone had a similar effect to you own. I think you may find that the module in yopur car is more easily replaced as its similar , if not the same, as a one used in other GM vehicles until a sometime later than 82.
