Default Outside Air Valve...I think???

Is the vacuum actuated valve in the right side windshield wiper linkage trough the outside air valve? If not, what is this called?

Additionally what HVAC control position should cause this flapper to move?

Trying to determine if the HVAC vacuum control switch is working or not.

I actually got this flapper out....not sure how I am going to get it back in though???!!!

This valve closes on MAX AC or re-circulate. It is a common source of problems with the AC. I have found many of them that didnt work from the factory. In the assembly process, the vacuum line is often pinched off, and some times the flap is restricted by globs of bonding agent.

Lanny.. are you talking about the one under the passenger side fender top... If so, they are kind of a pain to get out.

This vacuum pod is operated by the green stripe hose that is on the number 5 position of the select valve. The diagram below shows you the operation of this valve in different positions.

Wombvette is correct about issues.. Leaves, glue, and then the nipple on the flapper door being broke (the vacuum hoses connect to both sides as a pass thru).

Wilcox: yes...that be the one. And yes...it was a pain to get out...that is why I am wondering how I am going to get it back it....

I have the same diagram as above in the manual and thought the same that it was supposed to be the MAX AC position. However putting the HVAC control in MAX AC did not do anything. Pulled the actuator out, applied vacuum and it does operate so the actuator is good....so must be the vacuum control in the HVAC is no longer working.

Appears that I will need to replace this part of the switch.

Also seems like I will need to do some trimming as there is no way that the flap would ever close as is. The flap was wedged in tight with no room to move.

Just something else to fix...although I do not have the AC compressor installed....its sitting in a box on a shelf.

Thanks for the help guys.

You might try putting a drop of light weight oil in the switch and see if this clears up the issue. Look at the rivet in the middle and see if it's broke too. This vacuum switch is/was a horrible design in the fact that it's just two plastic halves held together with a spring loaded plastic rivet. Failures are common.

Go to the kick panel and see if that pod is working before you do anything. The orange stripe hose is on the same nipple.

The vacuum switch appears to be in very good condition, nothing broken, plastic clip in the middle is intact. With the switch in the OFF position I applied vacuum to the black hose which is the vacuum source from the engine and I can hear a leak. I moved the switch to the various positions and with the selected port plugged I still hear a leak.

I check all the vacuum actuators by applying vacuum to each of the hoses and watched the actuator moved with the exception of the one that controls coolant into the heater core.

There are five hoses going to the vacuum switch, one is source and then four to actuators. However there are five actuators. I am assuming the black with white stripe splits to two actuators: one for the outside air valve and the other for the coolant flow control to the heater core. I still need to check the coolant control for movement, all others work fine.

Going to try the drop of oil on the vacuum switch.

Thanks for the hint.
