Default Rust in the fuel filter?

I just changed the filter on my Q-Jet and the old one was covered with a very fine rust-colored powder (quite a bit of it). I've never seen this before when I changed filters. Looking into the tank through the filler neck, it looks very clean inside. Where did this come from???

The lines maybe?

Or maybe you picked some up a gas station fill up and it all ran through to the filter since there is none you can see in the tank. You got a fuel 'sock' in the tank?

I just changed my fuel filter at the carb. and when I disconnected the fuel line some what appears to be black dried gasket sealer came out in pieces! I cranked the starter to pump out some gas and more came out. I did this until the gas came out clear and put everything back together. Maybe a good practice to do this every time you change filters.

Greg

You'd be surprised just how dirty fuel is. When you think about it, where else does all the crap that clogs your filter come from? You're not dumping stuff in your tank and it isn't likely making its way in there while you have the cap off so it has to be in the fuel itself. Granted, you can have rust in your tank and lines, but this doesn't seem to apply to new cars where the change interval is around 20k to 30k miles.

:smash: Lot's of potential factors. How much you drive it is probably the biggest one next to how old the car is. My opinion is that I doubt it came from the pump. Mine started out with the same symptom and led to an eventual tank replacement - the lines were fine. The sediment is so fine you probably won't see it by looking down into the tank. My biggest problem is that I didn't (still don't) drive it enough to keep the gas almost always fresh. Good Luck!
