I'm repainting my 68' and want to know the best paint to use. Is there much difference between a urethane and a base coat/clear coat? What are my options?
I am no authority by any stretch of the imagination, but I recently had my '77 painted and used basecoat clearcoat. I believe the brand was Diamont? I think it came out pretty good.
hi james. go with base coat/clear coat for sure. much longer lasting and more durable than a single stage paint. any good quality materials will work. i like dupont, but lots of guys use ppg and its good paint too. godd luck, fng
i painted mine with base clear befor joining ncrs i will probly lose the
duntof award be cause of it but base clear shure looks great hold up
better so if you are not an ncrs member going for the hightest award
uas base clear i used r m brand
It depends on what color you are using and what your plans are for the car. If you're painting it a metallic color, then you should use base/clear urethane. If you're using a non-metallic color, then the decision depends on what you want the results to be. If you're chasing NCRS points, or just want more authentic factory looking results, use a single stage urethane. Otherwise you can use a base/clear urethane and get a deeper gloss and durability.
I used PPG, but I won't use it next time. I have had a problem with the paint shrinking now that it's a few months old. I had heard about paint shrink but I had never seen it. The only other thing that it could be is the K36 shrinking.

Man, I am so sorry to have heard that!!!! Have you talked with PPG and got any thoughts on your symptoms from them? Is it bad enough that we'd notice ot just something you notice when you polish the car?

I just got my Vette out of the shop, and we used PPG base/clear. It shines like a mirror. What is this shrinking you say will sart happening in a month? What exactly does it look like????
It's hard to say- it looks like it has just tighten up. More imperfections are showing now than when it was just a couple of months old. I didn't wax the car for 90 days so everthing would dry correctly. It's not bad enought to re-paint, but next time I'll try another brand. And it could be the K36 not the paint.

I too used the K-36, and then I used DB40 Primer/Sealer before the base coat. I used the PPG products because Lars swears by them, and he helped me by email all along the way as I was preparing it for final paint. As I said earlier, it looks like you are standing next to a mirror. It is painted a 95 Vette Brilliant Red Mettallic. What is also nice is there is absolutely no fish eyes or orange peel anywheres, so it is smooth.
