I was wondering if anyone knew exactly where the windshield washer pump is located, I haven't looked yet but I don't ever remember seeing it when I did my motor. I figured I could save some time by knowing exactly where it was for when I replace it this weekend. Any other tips on making this small job even easier would also be appreciated.
On my '70 it's against the firewall. The motor is sort of tucked into a nook /cranny made for it. It's right in the center of the car, just behind the distributor. You should see rubber lines coming off of it. I don't know if '77 is different or not though.
My 79 is mounted on the bottom of the washer resevoir. I think is was around 75 when they switch from being mount on the wiper motor to being mounted on the resevoir.
This is easy but has an added PITA factor. The pump is located on the underside of the resevoir. The resevoir can't come out unless you remove the master cylinder. The resevoir is also very hard to manage in there if you unbolt it in hopes of removing it. So you do it blind or wait until you have the master cylinder out.
On my 77 I only needed a ratchet, 7/8" 'deep' socket, and long extension (10"?).
On my 79 I was able to replace the pump by unbolting it from the body and using a long extensiom to remove the nut. First you need to seprate the fill neck and the body of the tank. Then reach in with a socket into the lower half of the tank and unscrew the nut off the pump. It helps to tape the nut to the socket when you reinstall the nut on the pump.It helps to have three hands to do this but it can be done.
When I replaced the tank a couple of years ago I was able to remove it from under the car where the charcol canester is located.
Pump and washer fluid reservoir come out from the bottom. First rocker panel comes off to get at bolts for the bottom access panel then charcol canister comes out. Not to bad, but a little tight on space.
Pump is mounted on bottom of reservoir if I remember right 15/16th is nut size. It's a common pump you should be able to get it from an autoparts supplier.
Good Luck.

I bought a pump for my '77 when it wasn't working. When I figured out where the pump is located ( behind left front tire inside the fender) I decided to see if I could fix it in the car. I was really lucky , the electrical plug came off. It was enough for me to get my big hands in there to plug it back in. I found it easier to put the car on jackstands to reach underneath. I have the pump sitting for when I really need it. :D
