$4500.00and 2 years hard work down the drain..................
I spent 2 years putting together my 406,detailed,clearance checked and triple torqued everything. Went through a gentle break in period, and finally let her loose. Launched hard, pulled 5500 through the gears, settled down again, everything seemed fine. Thirty minutes later I pull into the garage and hear this banging sound coming from the engine. Checked the oil, water, pulled a few plugs, valve covers, and even checked the timing. Looks OK,but sounds like it's hurt bad.
I think I'll disconnect the convertor tomorrow to see if it's the trans or the engine. Either way I feel sick to my stomach after all that work. Dang it!!!!!!!! :mad

I know EXACTLY how you feel. Last thing to do is drop the oil pan and pull the caps off your rods. Man I hope it is nothing that bad. My 383 is on an engine stand right now waiting for a rebuild. Only a couple hundred miles on it. :(

Man, I can read your post and have that uneasy feeling in my stomach. I sure hope things are ok, usually, I find that things aren't nearly as bad as I made them out to be.
Re: $4500.00and 2 years hard work down the drain.................. (The Money Pit)
Use a stethocsope , or long screw driver, to isolate the location of the banging. But run the engine as short a time as possible. Listen to the oil pan and side of the block. You may have spun a main bearing. If so, only the crank will probably need to fressened up along with new bearings.
Most importantly, try to figure out what happened so it won't happen again. A very seasoned mechanic used white lithium grease on all his journal surfaces on one of his rebuilds and his engine seized up shortly after driving it. He swore he would never use it again. I don't know if this was the culprite, but check out what a respected engine builder you know uses and follow suit. Many years ago, I spun my main bearings taking a corner very fast at high rpm with something less than full oil level. OUCH!
Re: $4500.00and 2 years hard work down the drain.................. (The Money Pit)
I fill your pain started building my 408 got it together in June and it spun the #1 main bearing ! With less then 300 miles on it ! Looked like it didn't get oil ! So 7 gt. oil pan, new oil pump (again ) and chank , plus bearings and I'm back driven her again ! :flag How is your oil pressure ?
Re: $4500.00and 2 years hard work down the drain.................. (The Money Pit)
It's wierd how sometimes the more careful you are, worse it goes...
There has to be a reason, so go slow and fix what needs fixin'. It's especially galling when I see people throw engines together and then totally luck out and have it live. :mad
Re: $4500.00and 2 years hard work down the drain.................. (The Money Pit)
I have the same noise coming from my engine. I was also missing a the tiny choke lever screw on the carb. I thought the thing dropped down in the engine and started banging around. I took the heads off and didn't see anything in the cylinders or any bent or damaged valves. I have not pulled the oil pan down yet. I have not checked the converter. I don't know what to look for. When you check your, let me know what you find so I know whether to examine mine or not.
Re: $4500.00and 2 years hard work down the drain.................. (The Money Pit)
when things like this happen best thing is to remember is that it is a hobby.
and thank god you know how to find and fix the trouble. doing it yourself twice still beats paying someone else to do it, whats the glory in that. hang in there and I hope it is a simple fix.
Re: $4500.00and 2 years hard work down the drain.................. (The Money Pit)
I've been there before...the hard part is waking up in the morning and thinking...HEY MAYBE THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY...going out and starting it up, just to find that it's really knocking. I've had problems appear overnight, but never had something get fixed overnight. Next step will be pulling the oil pan. I know this isn't what you want to hear, but maybe it's just a spun bearing or something that will cost around $300 for a reground crank, oversized bearings and a new seal and oil pan gasket set. Be calm...hey, maybe it's just the beast in the motor banging on the walls to be let out!
