This is my first summer w/new engine. First I fix the vapor lock problem" fuel line was on top of valve cover" and now the starter acts like it is not getting any juice! This is after several starts and stops around town on hot day. It started fine earlier in the day. What is "Heat Soak" and how do I fix this. I have seen the blanket that wraps around starter to protect it, do they work? Any other ideas out there? Being left w/car that won't restart sucks! Thanks for the help.
Search on heat soak in the threads. I just had a GM Performance Parts Mini Starter and a Morosso heat shield installed. You can also go with a remote solenoid. All the info is in the threads. E-Mail me if you need details!
Heat shield will help. The problem is in the solenoid. Your chevy dealer sells a replacement spring that will solve this problem. I replaced my spring many years ago and cured the problem. I recently installed headers and still no problem.
Steve,
Excellent tip! If I had known...before I went this expensive route ($180.00US). But no regrets. I have not had a soak problem since the installation.
I put a Moroso heatshield on it for extra insurance. It has been a year with no problems at all. Except it sounds like a Chrysler when you turn the key ;) . I was somewhat taken aback when I picked it up at the Chev dealer. If you look at the box closely you will note that this "GM Performance Part" is Made in Taiwan?? That puzzled me but it works fine, the quality of machining is excellent. I guess it is time to accept globalization of the automotive market!
I had this problem a couple of weeks ago in Denver. When I drove the Vette up to the house in the mountains, it would not start for about an hour afterwards.
The solution was a Mr. Gasket heat shield ($25) and a new starter solenoid ($15 at Autozone). I actually had to replace the solenoid anyway since the large positive terminal was stripped as I found out later. Actually was a pretty easy job until I broke a spark plug removing the header for access. So a two hour job turned into a two day job with runs to the part store. :smash:
Works great now though and the heat shield looks pretty nice under the headers.
