I have a 74 with tilt wheel and I need to replace the ignition switch. I ordered one based on what the Advance Auto website said (ACDelco D1405B) and then found out it is the wrong part based on other internet searches. I then ordered one from Corvette Central (593011) and when it arrived in the mail the two switches look identical. They both have the same mounting plate, same color plastic housing and the same movement of the piece that the rod goes into. I have verified that the rod on my column moves backwards as I turn the key clockwise.
My question is this, what and where do I get the correct ignition switch? I do not see how I can correctly put the switch on the column and have it work. There is is a green pin that holds the switch in the "OFF LOCK" position for installation I assume. If I install the switch then remove the pin, the switch will move from "OFF LOCK" to "ACC" as I turn the key "OFF LOCK" to "OFF".
Anyone have luck getting one from NAPA or Advance Auto by walking in the store. I am sick of waiting for he right part to show up and have it not be the right one.
New question related to this issue. Every website and catalog I look at tells me that I have the right parts for my 74 with tilt. Is it possible the previous owner put on an incorrect ignition switch and put it on backwards?
Can someone verify the way the switch is installed on the column? Currently, my switch is installed with the plastic part vertical and the metal tab pointing towards the left and down. It seams like the right way because the rod lines up but I want to verify before buying another switch.
When the T&T ignition switch is mounted correctly on the steering column jacket the switch contacts will be horizontal and pointing toward the passenger side of your Vette.
When you turn your ignition key to START, the ignition rod will be pulled up toward the driver. The ignition switch has one end that is a somewhat round cylinder and holds a compression spring. You compress the spring when you turn to START and the spring pushes you back to the RUN position. With the switch mounted correctly on the T&T column the internal spring will be on the steering wheel end of the switch.
Here is a picture of a 1977 ignition switch correctly attached to the steering column jacket. The steering wheel end is toward the right. All C3 T&T switches (as well as all GM tilt column switches) are the same and operate the same way.
Possibly, this picture could help as well.

Why not buy from the vendor offering you the online assistance? Wilcox Corvette is #1 in my book with best pricing, best working knowledge ( Jim Shea aside....thanks for sharing your vast knowledge with all us ordinary knuckle busters) I'm sure Ernie could put the right switch in a $7 US postal service quick mail box and get it out to you! Maybe next time?
Forget everything I have said here. I had a memory lapse and forgot what I saw. The new ignition switch (D1405B) that I have is the correct one, I just thought the old one was on a different way.
The tilt and tele switch p/n for your car should be a 1990116 which is a D1405B a/c delco... it should look like the one i have in the picture below.
This is one for a non tilt car.
I just got educated. Mine has the tilt/telescope and I would have figured they were all the same. Someday I'll have to face this. I ran into a similar issue with the headlight switch. O'Reilly's Auto Parts has the headlight switch...presumably for my 74 Corvette. Their switch doesn't have the vacuum ports for the headlights, nor can they get one with them. I had to order the correct one from Willcox
