Default VERY BUBBA IDEA.......but might work

ok...my heater core is shot, my blower motor is shot, my switches, and contrl panel are shot, and the whole box under the hood (firewall to blower housing) is shot. nearest i can tell, to replace all, plus time and aggrevation, is not worth it. however, i still might want to cruise on a cool night. i found an aux. heater that would easily mount in rear compartment, with two 3'' holes cut thru for ducts next to/behind seats. running the hoses would not be a problem either. question is, would this be too long for water hoses? ie; water cooling down too much for suffient heat, or would i be better mounting this on firewall where old box was, and using existing ducts? since my car is not stock, dosent look stock, and nobody would see any of this, i would rather go this route. the whole heater set-up is $149. less than the price of a new control panel alone. :smash:

Why not call Vintage Air and put ina whole new system that will work better than the original ever did?

Yea it would probably work... but this is definately a bubba. :nonod:

I wouldn't put it in the rear compartment... better to mount it where the old unit is.

I know replacing all the original parts is expensive, if it were me I'd do that rather than settle for too much bubba-ness if I could avoid it.

But that's just me. I didn't have any money when I started this project and I know I won't have any money ever again.

My $.02.......fix if the right way and you will be happier in the end, as will whoever buys the Vette from you down the road.

Have you looked into getting the parts from a Vette junkyard? Seems like some of those parts would probably still be good from a junker (not the core of course).

Ya know, why hasn't anyone made an electric heater with a blower fan bolted to the back, all 12 volt with a pentiometer/rheostat to control fan speed?

You didn't say what year your car is, but in fact doing what you say there is much more difficult than fixing the system you have now....
cores are not that much, motors are cheap, and that controll panel can be rewired or repaired for next to nothing....about ten bux total....
if you have that plastic controll panel like in 77?? up late sharks, I hear you with reguard to it being expensive to fix, and it's a real POS for sure, but can be altered with a piece of aluminum and some switches to work fine...

mostly, I see them propped up in position by pieces of wood cut to size underneath...

I just paid someone to do most of this same work to my '79 and it was expensive. The actual parts weren't that much, but he did an excellent job and put in a lot of hours. If I had to do it over again, I would have done it myself and collected the parts off of ebay. All of these parts come up frequently on ebay, and many times are brand new. They usually sell at a fraction of the price of what's listed in the catalogs. Since you have a '77, I think you can use parts from a '77 to an '82. I think going the bubba route would be a bad idea in the long run and a subsequent owner would be cursing you. Paste this into the search box and have fun.

Good luck.
