Default 1980 blows CTSY fuse

Hi guys

Just starting on my 1980 car project and it has a few gremlins, tach not working and stuck at 3500. Maybe filter or most likely board Im guessing on that one.

CTSY fuse blows in a second or two as soon as a new one is installed, so sounds like a direct hot ground to me ?

What is the most common problem you have found with these cars. Cig lighter bad or grounded, glove box light, Alarm horn maybe ?

The driver side door dome light plunger switch was missing and the plug was just hanging there and I thought for sure that may be it but nope, I removed the kick panel taped it up and no change.

I know it could be a number of things, but its always best to ask the been there done that question first

Thanks allot >>> Dale

Mine was a constant hot off the cigarette lighter for the aftermarket stereo, i think. I had a bunch of Bubba wiring from previous radio and sound system "upgrades". Once I pulled it all out and fixed the loose wires the problem went away.

Probably going to need to remove the shifter console and then the gauge console to expose all the wiring to see what Bubba has done. Be careful as the plastic is brittle.

If memory serves, the cigarette lighter is on the courtesy light circuit along with the door jamb switch. Since you indicate problems with each, either could be the culprit. I would replace the door jamb switch and check the wiring for the lighter.

Door jam, lighter, overhead light and lower console lighting are my first thoughts. Wiring to all of them could be suspect. I'd check each one at a time to see which one is suspect.

There is a thread at the top that talks about electronics on the cars. It may be helpful to have a digital tester handy when you are testing each circuit end.

Thanks guys

I ordered the factory GM reprint service manual on Amazon and have been looking it over the last few days.

Ive eliminated the dome light door switch. I think I will start with the easy stuff first by pulling the center console to check the lighter, then glove box light. Someone did install a JVC stereo so may need to check all that as well, though it works and does not pop the radio fuse.

I made a list of components that are on the 1980 CTSY fuse circuit

Tell me if I may have missed anything

1. Horns / relay

2. Anti theft system

3 .Power door locks

4. Clock, Cig lighter, Courtesy lights, Dome light, Glove box light

5. Spare tire light

6. Power antenna

I may luck out and find it easy or this could be a real pain in the ARRS

Cheers DW

Well I may have lucked out

Pulled the cig lighter and all was well, also the glove box light. Started checking the auto they system and it appears the plunger switch when you lift the hood seems to have been grounding out.

Bubba had it all wrapped with black tape, so I said what the heck. Peeled off the tape and pulled the wire terminals from the switch. The fuse seems to be living so far. Drove it 15 miles and went and steam cleaned the engine compartment.

What I did during all the tests was install a 25 amp plug in breaker so I did not eat up box of fuses.

The lighter now has power, glove box works, courtesy lights, dome light, but no clock. Maybe its fried or does not have power to it ?

Dome light does not come on though when you turn the headlight switch all the way to the left ?

Door locks now try but labor, so plan to first remove the door panels and lube everything up to see if they will come back to life.

?????? My drivers electric window is intermittent on the way back up and makes a funny groaning ........sounding like its coming from the switch in the center console.

Has anyone had this happen before, seems a new switch would be the first thing to do here ?

Thanks DW
