Default Header recommendation anyone?

Hi all;
I know this has probably been beat to death but I have been combing the internet and forums for headers that will work for my 1977 Vette, Calilfornia car with A.I.R. tubes. I want to keep it legal. Is there anything out there that is available? I am assuming shorties are the only way to go.

I am also considering:
- a crate engine (again the legality thing) vs rebuilding and upgrading the current lump
- 5-speed conversion (from the current TH350)
- steering upgrade

I have already rebuilt both f/r suspensions (the car rides like a dream), brakes and power steering components.

Thanks,
Jim

I would wait until you decide on what to do. If you are in CA and need to SMOG it your options are a little limited.

Look into the GM E-ROD line for a Smog legal conversion.

I think you can have the A.I.R. tubes installed on just about any set of headers by a good welder. Just buy painted headers, have the tubes installed, and then have them ceramic coated.

You'll need to see if there are CARB-legal headers for your engine - a little time on Summit Racing or another site will tell you what's out there.

I agree that the E-Rod is a great conversion...but it ain't cheap

...but if they don't have a CARB sticker, they're not legal.

Nice save, Billla, I didn't even think of that.

Here in Massachusetts, we have a safety inspection once a year, and vehicles don't get tested for emissions once they reach a certain age, so that sort of thing is not an issue here. I guess they figure there aren't enough of these old cars on the road to make much of a difference, so why not just leave them alone?

It's the same here in Pa., Anything goes...

OP, keep ground clearance in mind when choosing headers, my collectors were ground flat when i got the car.

Hi Jim,

I believe Hedman makes hedders that will work with the air tubes. Check out their website and I think you will find something that will work for you.

I have the Hedman 68300 in my 77 with a crate engine.

I had the hedders ceramic coated they fit good and did not cost huge dollars.

I'm running Hedman 68301-6 in my 78 and they came with an EO label.

I can't remember if the -6 was for the AIR ports or the ceramic coating. Have been fine since.

Guys,
Thanks for the input. I have pretty much decided that I want to push the legal limits with this car. I realize that a '77 CA car is probably one of the worst cars to do that with but that is what I have and it is what it is. Actually I have gone back and forth on what to do with the car, I have tried to sell it but no takers so I think I will have some fun with it. I can do a lot of the work myself and will try to keep the total spent around $15K so the E-ROD engine is probably not an option.

I went to the California arb site: http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermk...rmktdevice.php
and if you search for Corvette some headers do come up so I can check those out. Scotty, great idea, there is a way you can hook up with a "smog referee" maybe they have some flexibility and could approve something like that although right now I have no idea.

I'll keep you posted on what I find out, I have some time to plan this project and probably won't get started until this summer some time.

Mick, how the heck did you get that picture of your dog?

Shark, the heat riser is on the right side down pipe. Doesn't that rule out any long-tube header?

Jim, they have some bracketry for adding a heat riser included with the kit.

I don't know of any legal shorties, aside from retro'ing a set of 81-82 manifolds.

I am glad I asked you guys, I thought the heat riser would eliminate the long tube headers but if they can accommodate it then that is great. I am thinking then that a set of 68301s, upstream of dual exhausts with two cats would give a significant performance bump while keeping the Calif ARB happy. Does that make sense?

To some degree. If you have some spare time, you should swing by my place and I can give you a tour of my car to give you an idea of what I've done to comply. You can also check out the headers.
