Bought and modified a universal loop on auction site for 23 bucks. This might help someone who is interested in building a loop. Used the two holes in the cross member and drilled and tapped a couple in the side.
I agree the welds aren't pretty but they are good welds. I should have ground off the zink plating and they would have looked better. I have seen a lot of pretty welds that have no penetration.
I posted years ago about using the Universal drive shaft loop. I welded mine to the rear cross member because of several reasons. More centrally located on the drive shaft. More rear weight bias. I have a exhaust pass under exhaust system to make it easier to R&R the transmission and I don't have to deal with the addition drive shaft loop
But what are the NHRA rules to make it legal as a DS loop?
Mine passed NHRA tech inspections. You have to read the rule books and know them better than the tech inspectors if there is any question.
They allow a unibody type cars to bolt the hoop to the flimsy sheet metal of the floor pan.
I did mine for personal safety. You have to think about that drive shaft being very close to your back side. I was running an OD with a 4.11 rear end. You get drive shaft rpm of 8000+ rpm at high speed
