Default tank sending unit leaking

Removed spare tire carrier and bumped sending unit and it started leaking I then drained tank and noticed after tightening retaining ring the sender can still be moved around like it never gets tight.I looked at o ring and it looks good but ordered a new one anyway. It's almost like the o ring shrunk. It was installed in 2006 with new tank and sending unit by previous owner. Should the sending unit be able to rotate after ring tightened. Just curious.

Once tightened, the sending unit should not move at all. You should have to use a tool such as a flat screwdriver and a hammer to knock the cam into place in the notches.

That's what I figured. It's just strange.I guess the rubber shrank somehow. It doesn't really look deteriorated. Its still pliable. I ordered a new retaining ring also.Just weird it decided to start leaking now.I have had the car going on 4 years now.Never a drop.I wonder if the ethanol had something to do with it.

Can you turn the lock ring (sending unit cam) by hand? If so the sending unit cam may not be correctly made... had that happen to me went to put the new sending unit in and the cam was able to be turned by had... they had not bent the "ramps" leading up to the lock position enough so the cam was too loose.

Like mentioned above you should have to use the fancy tool or a screwdriver and hammer to tap the cam around to lock the sending unit in.

I put in new seal a little while ago. The locking ring went on tight.I can't slide the sender around like before but if I push up on the tube that comes out of the unit it still leaks gas around it.When I let go it's fine..I just ordered a new account Delco sending unit with a new locking ring.Dont want to take a chance on it leaking going down the road.

If you don't have one......get a good fire extinguisher too (In 50 years I 've seen several vehicles burned when they could have been saved with an easy-to-reach extinguisher/my daughter's car engine caught fire when the carb flooded--backfired on start-up...the extinguisher saved it)
