Default 3:73 vs 3:08 stock

I have the 75 L48 that probably puts out around 200 hp. What can I expect from changing from the stock 3:08 to the 3:73s. Any one done this that can comment? Any idea on cost?? Thanks

3.08 to 3.73 will give you a noticable increase in acceleration. Surely enough to feel in the seat of your pants.

0-60 will make you think you dropped a new motor in it. 80 on the highway sucks with 3.73. keep that in mind, especially if you don't have OD. If you don't plan to do much freeway driving, go for it! 3.73's will make a world of difference. Personally, I like the gears high enough so I can drive it on the freeway without the worries of 3000 rpm the whole time, and extra noise. If I do decide on a gear change, I'll probably go with 3.23. The stock 2.83 is pretty high, robbing me of power.

Yeah, you'll get more ballsy around town but don't even bother going above 60mph for long unless you don't mind paying for gas. If all you do is drive city or have an overdrive tranny, go for it, you won't regret it. My 3.55s are at 1500rpm at 30mph, so it works out pretty well with my TH350.

Ditto what others have said. Mine came with 3.70 from the factory and pulls nicely with a 4 speed but really needs a 5th gear and a 30 gallon tank on the highway.

Sure could get on with a 5sp and my 3.70. Don't think the bladder would take a 30 gallon tank though. Ha!

3.70 is stock but US GEAR makes a 3.73 for us....don't believe me? call Tom's Differentials he'll price and sell em to ya.

as for 3.08's to 3.70, I just did this a month ago and man....am I LOVING IT.
I used to drive a 350/auto/3.73 rear wheel, year round here in WI for 9-10 years without overdrive in a '81 regal. I never complained one bit ! and I am not complaining now either !!

here is a pic of my rear-end buildup. http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c3/ylo...ff_rebuild.jpg

Riorata- don't say bladder! My Vette has a bladder problem. Its down to maybe 13-14 gallons now!!! I think when it dips below 10 galons it will be time for radical bladder surgery.

PS- Are you really in Bahrain? Must get hot riding around in the Vette with a robe and turbin on.

Alywn678 what RPM's are you running at 70 MPH? I have a 3.07 but with the close ratio 4spd. I'm still 3200 RPM at 70 MPH. I cannot grear up my choice is to go with a 5spd. with a tall OD gear.

WOW, I have a 3:70 with an M20 4sp and at 70 I'm doing about 3400 rpm. I would have thought that with 3:07's it would be much better  Unless the close ratio (M21 I think) is causing that..

3.55's would be a good compromise, I'm pretty happy with mine overall. The 3.36's were better on the highway though but not that big of a difference, 3000rpm is 65mph with 26" tires and 3.55's. the 3.36's were probably about 2700-2800 rpm at 65mph. As far as cost, there is a wide variance depending on how much of the work you do yourself, If you pull your own thid member and take it to have the gears setup your probably looking about 3.5-4.5 hours labor plus 120 in parts not including the gears if you want to overhaul the whole thing (good idea while it's apart). The gear set will probably run about 250.
