Default Cheap, good flowing heads for a 75 vette?

What heads and cam can I get to reach around 300hp at the engine (or as close to that as possible). I will have headers and an eddlebrock intake manifold. And about how much would these heads/cam cost.

Thanks

PS What kind of carb should I get?

Either the Dart or the World products cast iron heads are durable, flow well, reasonably priced and are compatible with most existing hi-po hardware.

Is about 300hp on a 75 L-48 possible with replacing heads/cam/intake/carb? And where could I find those heads that you mentioned. Do you know if they have a website? Or would I order through jegs, summit, etc?

Thanks :yesnod:

I want cheap, thats why I'm NOT getting a ZZ4. The ZZ4 would cost me around 7k installed, I REALLY hope that this heads/cam setup is cheaper then that! Am I way off here? Honestly? Cuz if I am, I might just sell the car. I bought it when I didn't know anything about Vette's, I got it cuz it looked cool. I've kept it for the last few years cuz it was my first vette, but if it's gunna cost this much I might HAVE to sell it. It's just too slow right now.

 :(

Get the Vortec heads, have them ported, and put then Edlebrock intake for them on it. Get a drop base airfilter to make sure it fits under the hood.

Well here's what i did, and it should be a strong runner (350 hp)

GM 041 64cc Closed Chamber Heads with LT1 springs, polished, light port work: $350

Comp Cam XE268 Cam and Lifters: $161
Crane Energizer 1.50:1 Aluminum Roller Rockers: $161
Edelbrock Performer EPS Manifold : $137

So for about $800 it should be a pretty screaming setup.

WoW, that sounds awesome! 800 bucks for 350hp. Are heads for these cars really that cheap? or did you get them used for a deal? The heads that I recently bought for my 98 vette were almost $3,500.00! Where can I order those heads from? I'm ready to buy :yesnod:

Get the Vortecs, replace the stock springs.....you'll be very happy. I did mine for about $850 and that included the Edelbrock manifold and all the gaskets and bolts. Best hp/$ upgrade I've made to the beast.

A DUMB Question....since GM recommends it, dont you also have to purchase a Vortec Intake Manifold at an additional Cost? Why not go with a set of Street/Replacement Torquers ($750.00 @ Summit), a Weiand Action Plus Dual Plane Intake for abt $88.00, and a good street cam of your choice? Pleez see my sig b4 deciding....I am desk dynoing 275 HP w/o new heads and headers..... Cam and lifters abt 130 bucks, dualplane intake at $88.00, chambered pipes at 299.99 from Mid America. Do ALL you want to the motor of your choice, but if you do not put on a true dual exhaust system of some kind, your motor will NEVER realize its potential, and LOTS of folks here will tell ya that for sure.....GOOD LUCKl

If you are going to spend $850 you might as well buy a set of aluminum Trick flow heads for $939 from summit and get 10% off if you mention the 10% discount. That is less than $900 and they flow better then ported vortech and you can run higher compression since they are aluminum. 10/1 on 93 oct no problem. Just a thought.

Do a search in the archives about the gm crate engines their is a link to a build up one mag did with the gm univeral crate engine and they recommend buying trick flows instead of spending the money on ported vortechs.

Nassy, it depends on shipping, but I have a set of ported/polished 993 heads, in good clean condition, came off my car, wish I never bothered with the Edel heads I have there now, not worth the bux for the change....but all I want is 300 bux for them, ready to dust off and bolt on....work fine with a .520 lift cam....

Nassy,

I got my parts from Scoggin-Dickey Part Center. Here's the link: http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...d=277&pid=1120

I paid $699 plus shipping back in December, now going for $729. You can also check other Goodwrench parts distributors. I hear some of them are selling the kit as well.

A set of LT-1 springs and I was ready to go. Got a set of center bolt valve covers and the drop base Edelbrock air filter from Ebay at decent prices. I already had the cam in the car so that didn't need to be done.

So for about $850 into the car for everything, including all the odds and ends (I replaced the timing chain and gears as well) I'm pretty happy with what I got. Running right around 300 hp now, which is good enough for me.

Good luck. :chevy

A mildly ported, polished set of OEM 993 cast iron castings with 2.02/1.60 valves (or even 882's if you have them) along with a Comp Cams 268H High Energy cam, Edelbrock Performer intake, headers, duals and hypereutectic flat-top pistons will easily produce 300hp at the flywheel. I had this combo (except for the porting/polishing) on my '80 L48 before moving up to the Darts and easily produced 190rwhp. Assuming 30% parasitic losses in the drivetrain and with accessories, it was probably right at 300 flywheel horsepower (net hp).

Now, if you are shooting for 350-400hp at the flywheel, I'd propose moving to the Dart Iron Eagle, World Product or Airflow heads.

Correction: I was getting 190rwhp with cast iron exhaust manifolds and 'cobbled' dual exhaust. I added the headers and a fresh dual exhaust with the Dart Iron Eagles. Have yet to dyno flog it since. Anticipating 250-300rwhp with this change...
